Peritoneal dialysis is a treatment for end-stage kidney failure.  It uses the peritoneum membrane – which is the inner lining of the abdomen. The peritoneal membrane has a rich supply of capillaries. If a suitable fluid (dialysate) is instilled into the abdomen of a kidney failure patient, the toxins in the capillary blood into the dialysate, which can be drained away to remove the toxin.

There are two main types of peritoneal dialysis – intermittent peritoneal dialysis and continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD).  CAPD is much more commonly used.
