Concentrated solutions can damage peripheral veins easily and will make the creation of AV fistula impossible.  A Hickman line is used to administer concentrated solutions to the patients through a big vein in the body.   Such solutions include concentrated nutrition solutions and medicines for chemotherapy. Instead of an open surgical operation, the Hickman line can be inserted in the same manner of a dialysis catheter.  It can be done under local anesthesia by a nephrologist, who used to called the line a ‘Hickman catheter’.
