Multiple myeloma is a disease of the bone marrow. It produces a special protein called light chains. The protein was released to the blood and filtered in the kidneys, where there kidney damage was done. There are special tests which can detect the light chain in the blood or the urine, thus helping the diagnosis.

In this video, Dr Ho Chung Piing described by a single method to detect the light chain using the Bence Jones protein detection by boiling the urine in the clinic. No special chemical is required and even the burner can be home made. However, this test involves boiling and only experienced people should perform this test. The ‘high cut-off’ dialysis was also discussed.
