In conventional haemodialysis, two needles are needed.  One for taking out the blood for dialysis and another one for returning the cleansed blood to the patient.  There are circumstances in which only one needle is available, eg, a very short AV fistula. Single needle haemodialysis is a special technique which enables haemodialysis to be done with one needle or one catheter only. Special machines are necessary for such purposes.

Ms Hannah Yuen and Wong Sui Lan explained the single needle technology with a demonstration.
