For those patients needing haemodialysis urgently, doctors can insert a catheter into the vein in the thigh (the femoral vein).  In the last century, Dr Seldinger described a technique by which a catheter can be inserted into blood vessels using a guide wire.  Dr Ho Chung Ping showed how to insert a catheter into the femoral vein. The procedure was safe and the catheter can be used for dialysis immediately. The disadvantages of the femoral approach were discussed in the video.
